Sauðárkrókur

October 9, 2009 at 5:28 pm | Posted in adventures | Leave a comment

Sauðárkrókur is a town in Skagafjörður in northern Iceland and a part of the municipality of Skagafjörður. Sauðárkrókur is the largest town in Northwest Iceland and the second-largest town on the north coast of Iceland, with a population of 2598PIC_4388

Sauðárkrókur got its name from the creek that runs through the land. The creek is named Sauðá, and the name Sauðárkrókur indicates that this is the coast where Sauðá meets the Ocean. Directly translated to english the name would be ‘Sheep-river-hook’, and the people from the town are affectionately known as sheep-river-hookers.

In the town of Sauðárkrókur there is a factory called ATLANTIC LEATHER which makes fish leather, and we are all excited to be given the grand tour. Maria was fantastic and explained all the processes and showed us around. They process other animals as well and it was funny to see how long the hair is from Icelandic sheep.

Or IN water in this case. My optical face mask seemed like a good idea at the tiem, and indeed I was able to see under the water. It was quite magic to see the bubbles escaping from the fissures in the rocks, although our resident mad irishman claimed they came from him.

The stretch of bitterly cold sea between the island and the Reykjaströnd coastline to the southwest is known as Grettir’s Swim, which the outlaw reputedly swam across to fetch the glowing embers he’d spotted on the mainland after his own fire has gone out; its 7.5km are still sometimes swum for sport despite the water temperature in summer barely rising above 9°C. However, if the bawdy humour of the sagas is anything to go by, this feat certainly takes its toll, even on Viking superheroes; according to Grettir’s Saga two young women, finding Grettir lying naked on the ground numb after his swim through the freezing waters, declare “he is certainly big enough in the chest but it seems very odd how small he is farther down. That part of him isn’t up to the rest of him”; to which Grettir retorts “the wench has complained that my penis is small and the boastful slut may well be right. But a small one can grow and I’m still a young man, so wait until I get into action, my lass.”

Indeed, to revive himself after the swim, Grettir jumped into a hot pool now known as Grettislaug and located at the abandoned farm of Reykir.   As Grettir did, you can cast off your clothes, step into the hot water and steam to your heart’s content.

I have to be completely honest and admit that I could not actually fit through the last hatch so this is a pic taken with my camera with my hand out the hatch. The railing along the top is in the pic for authenticity. Well actually it just got in the way.

Today a whole group of us piled in the town van for an axcursion to a lighthouse right on the tip of our peninsula. The lighthouse keeper met us with the key and led us all up the slope. PIC_4180
Skagastrond is a village on a small cove along the west coast of Skagi. It is on a large peninsular called Skagafjordur and at the tip of that is the lighthouse.
